It is 6:12 a.m.
You wake up feeling surprisingly good.
Then you reach for your phone—not because you are addicted, of course. You simply want to check whether you are officially allowed to feel good.
The app opens.
Sleep score: 68.
Your deep sleep was too short, your heart rate variability is below your personal baseline, and your recovery has been classified as “compromised.”
Thirty seconds later, you feel compromised.
There was a time when people woke up tired. Today, we wake up feeling fine and are then shown—in writing, in colour and with a trend line—why that feeling is incorrect.
This is called progress.
Now the healthy part of the morning begins.
You drink water with electrolytes, expose yourself to daylight, check your glucose, perform breathing exercises, mobilise your hips, take seven supplements and delay your first coffee for 90 minutes.
Next comes a brief cold exposure, ten minutes of meditation and a walk without sunglasses, so your circadian rhythm knows you are taking this seriously.
By 8:25 a.m., you are ready for the day.
Unfortunately, you now need a break.
Welcome to an industry that promises recovery while demanding a remarkable amount of performance.
The new morning shift begins in bed
We have managed to turn even sleep into a discipline.
We no longer simply sleep. We accumulate deep sleep, defend our REM cycles and try not to demolish our entire sleep architecture with a glass of wine.
We monitor glucose curves while eating. We no longer go for walks; we collect steps. During meditation, we secretly check how long we have been meditating. After the sauna, we consult our watch to make sure it understood how healthy the experience was.
Modern humans can barely recover without simultaneously producing data about their recovery.
I say this as someone who loves health technology.
I have spent years working with technologies, measurement systems and concepts designed to help people recover faster, sleep better and regain their energy. Many of these systems are genuinely impressive.
The problem does not begin with the device. It begins when support becomes another form of performance assessment.
When people stop asking “How do I feel?” but “How does my app say I am supposed to feel today?”
The body says: actually, not bad.
The ring says: mediocre.
Naturally, we believe the ring. It has a dashboard. The body arrives with nothing more than a feeling.
A very weak presentation.
The market is growing faster than people can keep up.
The global wellness economy reached $6.8 trillion in 2024 and has doubled in size since 2013. The Global Wellness Institute expects it to approach $9.8 trillion by 2029.[1]
We are buying more wellness than ever: more programmes, devices, supplements, memberships, apps and probably more water bottles than the human species biologically requires.
At the same time, approximately 1.8 billion adults, or 31 percent of the global adult population, did not meet recommended levels of physical activity in 2022, according to the World Health Organization.[2]
That does not mean wellness products are preventing people from exercising. It suggests something more fundamental: the health market is expanding faster than many people’s ability to integrate health into everyday life.
The problem is probably not a lack of information.
Most people have heard that sleep matters, movement is beneficial and twelve hours of screen time is not generally considered a recovery protocol. They rarely fail because nobody has told them about broccoli.
They fail because it is Monday.
Because the children need to get to school. Because the first meeting starts at eight. Because their minds are already full. And because the recommended morning routine now reads like the launch procedure for a crewed mission to Mars.
A health solution that only works in a perfect life is not a solution. It is a hobby for people with plenty of time and a dedicated supplement cupboard.
Wellness’s favourite customer
McKinsey describes one particularly valuable group of consumers as “maximalist optimisers". They represent roughly a quarter of wellness consumers but account for more than 40 percent of spending.
They research intensively, experiment widely and are especially interested in science-backed solutions and digital technology.[3]
For the wellness industry, this is the ideal customer.
Until they become a customer of everything.
Then they own a ring for sleep, a watch for exercise, a glucose sensor, a breathing app, a meditation app and another app that reminds them to use the other apps.
They also have red light, blue-light filters, PEMF, intermittent hypoxic training, an acupressure mat, a cold plunge, an air purifier and 23 containers of powders whose contents might once have been called breakfast.
Their home looks like a NASA laboratory.
Their nervous system looks like an airport during a systems failure.
And despite doing more for their health than almost anyone before them, they live with the persistent sense that they have forgotten something.
Did I take the magnesium? Hit my protein target? Complete my steps? Get morning light? Improve my HRV? Drink enough? Eat too late? Train too early? Breathe incorrectly?
It is now possible to spend an entire day preparing to live longer. Living itself may have to wait until the weekend.
People buy health technology to regain a sense of control. Sometimes, they end up building a system that reminds them every morning of everything they still do not control.
When sleep starts handing out grades
There is now a term for an excessive fixation on achieving perfect sleep data:
Orthosomnia.
It is not an officially recognised medical diagnosis. The term was proposed to describe people whose efforts to optimise their sleep metrics create stress that may itself interfere with sleep.
In 2017, sleep specialists described patients who sought treatment for apparent sleep problems largely inferred from wearable data. Some were trying so hard to improve their numbers that the perfectionism itself had become part of the problem.[4]
A Norwegian study published in 2026 offers a more nuanced picture. Of 1,002 adults surveyed, 46 percent had used a sleep app or device. Among a subgroup of users who answered questions about perceived effects, 15.4 percent said tracking had improved their sleep, while 2.3 percent said it had made their sleep worse. The most common negative effect was increased worry about sleep, reported by 17.8 percent. People with insomnia symptoms were more likely to report negative effects.[5]
The study relied on self-reported experiences and does not prove that the apps caused those outcomes. But it illustrates an important point: the same information can support one person and burden another.
You are awake at 3:17 a.m., thinking about how being awake will damage tomorrow’s sleep score.
Your stress rises. Falling asleep becomes harder.
In the morning, the app confirms that your night was suboptimal.
Technically, it was correct. Humanly, it may not have been particularly helpful.
It is rather like having someone stand beside your bed and ask every five minutes:
“Are you asleep yet?”
Data is not the problem
It would be too easy to blame wearables, sensors and health apps.
Data can be enormously valuable. It can reveal patterns we would otherwise miss. It can show connections between sleep, training, alcohol, stress and recovery. It can motivate people and document meaningful change.
But a measurement needs translation.
“Your HRV is 14 percent lower today” is information. It is not yet guidance.
What should the person do with it? Train less? Go to bed earlier? Eat more? Work less? Breathe for ten minutes? Block their boss? Or simply stop checking their HRV every four minutes?
A dashboard without a clear next step is not health guidance. It is a visually attractive way to worry.
The best technology does more than report what it measured. It helps people understand what makes sense now.
Sometimes the most useful recommendation is not, “Add another routine.”
It is, “Do less today.”
For an industry built on selling additional things, this is an almost revolutionary idea.
Recovery should work differently in hotels, centres and homes
Most people do not need another health task. They need someone—or something—to remove some of the complexity.
That is true in hotels, spas and recovery centres. It is equally true in the rapidly expanding home-recovery market. But recovery cannot follow the same model in all three environments.
In a hotel, recovery must be immediately understandable.
A guest does not arrive at reception thinking, “Today I would enjoy a combination of PEMF, photobiomodulation, brainwave entrainment and HRV-guided biofeedback.”
The guest thinks, “I am completely exhausted. Is there anything here that might make me feel human again?”
Yet many hotels present recovery entirely from the technology’s perspective. Guests receive a menu containing twelve treatments, 26 technical terms and several stock images of cheerful mitochondria.
They ask, “What will this do for me?”
The answer is: “It supports several processes within the body.”
“Which processes?”
“Yes.”
In a hotel, recovery is first an experience. The guest needs an easy entry point, a short application and a benefit they can notice during their stay.
In a recovery centre, people need guidance.
A centre can go deeper. Technologies can be combined, progress followed and programmes built across multiple visits.
But customers still do not want to become the technical directors of their own recovery. They need a clear recommendation, a logical sequence and someone who can explain why today’s particular treatment makes sense.
A room full of expensive equipment is not yet a concept.
Sometimes it is simply a very costly storage facility with indirect lighting.
At home, recovery must not become another form of home working.
Home recovery carries an enormous promise: no appointment, no journey, no waiting and no message saying, “We have an opening next Thursday at 2:40 p.m.”
The true product is therefore not only the device. It is availability—the ability to recover when recovery is needed: after training, before sleep, between meetings or on the evening when your mind decides to replay the entire week.
But many home-recovery businesses repeat the same mistake as the broader wellness market. They sell the device and hand the customer responsibility for the programmes, intensity, duration, combinations, interpretation and motivation.
A system costing several thousand francs then sits in the living room. It is used every day for two weeks, three times in week three, and by week six the remote control has moved to a place known only to the universe.
This is not primarily a technology problem. It is a usage-model problem.
Three home recovery approaches
The gadget model: one tool for one problem. It is inexpensive, purchased quickly and forgotten just as quickly. Eventually, the customer owns seven solutions but has no coherent routine.
The home technology room: several powerful systems combined in one place. This can work extremely well, but it requires expertise, space, time and an unusually durable relationship with instruction manuals.
The guided home recovery model: The technology remains sophisticated in the background while its use becomes simple. People select a goal—calm, energy, sleep or physical recovery—rather than choosing frequencies and technical settings. Programmes, duration, onboarding and repetition have already been considered.
Home recovery will not become mainstream because people want to own more equipment. It will become mainstream when good technology is as easy to use as switching on a light.
Hotels can create the first moment of discovery. Recovery centres can guide and deepen the experience. The home determines whether recovery remains an occasional treatment or becomes part of everyday life.
These are not competing business models. Together, they can form a continuous journey: experience it, understand it, continue it at home.
Relieve. Guide. Feel.
A genuinely good recovery experience needs to do three things, whether it takes place in a hotel, a centre or a private home.
Relieve
Someone who is exhausted does not want to make twelve decisions before beginning.
An intelligent system narrows the visible choices without reducing the possibilities in the background. The user should not need to understand which frequency, light wavelength or breathing sequence is being applied.
A hotel guest does not study the heat pump before adjusting the temperature. They simply expect it to work.
Guide
The experience does not begin when the device is switched on. It begins with the explanation.
What is about to happen? Why was this treatment chosen? How long will it take? What might the person notice during or after it?
At home, guidance must also answer practical questions. Which programme makes sense after training? What should I use before sleep? What fits into an ordinary working day?
Technology without understandable guidance is expensive furniture with a power cable.
Feel
In the end, the number of functions matters less than whether a person notices a difference.
Is my mind quieter? Does my body feel lighter? Can I think more clearly? Am I recovering better after training? Can I switch off more easily tonight?
Data can complement that experience, confirm it or put it into context over time. It should not replace personal perception entirely.
If someone feels significantly better after a session but the metric barely moves, the session was not automatically worthless. And if the metric looks perfect while the person feels dreadful, perhaps we should ask another question.
The human being is not an inconvenient variable in the measurement. The human being is why we are measuring.
Simplicity is becoming the real luxury
We live in a world where almost everything is available: information, products, programmes, technology, experts, gurus and people who return from a weekend in Dubai ready to explain how everyone else can live to 140.
What is becoming scarce is not choice.
It is orientation.
Real luxury increasingly means not having to choose from more options.
It means feeling that someone has already considered what makes sense for you at this particular moment.
Creating that simplicity requires considerable expertise behind the scenes. But at the point of use, it should feel effortless.
That is the next major opportunity for health technology, hospitality, recovery centres and home-recovery providers.
Not more health assignments.
Not more data without consequences.
Not more devices that take longer to explain than to use.
We need experiences that fit into real lives, make a difference early and do not leave people feeling that professional recovery is one more competence they must acquire by tomorrow morning.
Perhaps the wellness industry has been asking the wrong question.
We keep asking: How can we persuade people to do more for their health?
A more useful question would be: How can we build products and experiences that finally do more for people?
People do not need another boss—especially one they wear on their wrist at night.
Recovery that requires you to recover from it has narrowly missed the point.
That is where recovery intelligence begins.
