A supplement can be built around a perfectly true biological fact and still leave its most important sales proposition unanswered. Nucleotides illustrate the distinction particularly well. Our cells depend on them. Whether taking additional nucleotides helps a reasonably well-nourished adult remain healthier for longer is a separate question.
That question now has more substance than it did a few years ago. Small human experiments and a recent ageing trial give researchers reasons to investigate. They also give consumers a difficult reading task: separating what a molecule does inside the body from what a particular supplement has been shown to do for the person taking it.
Swiss brand Vegana Natura provides a useful case study. Its website presents nucleotide products alongside themes including immunity, gut health, sport, recovery and longevity. It also emphasises purity, defined mixtures and Swiss production. Those are claims about several different things, and they should not be evaluated as if they were one scientific claim. [7]
What are nucleotides?
A nucleotide contains a nitrogen-containing base, a sugar and one or more phosphate groups. DNA and RNA are assembled from nucleotide building blocks. A nucleoside is the related structure without the phosphate group. The similar names are easy to confuse, but the distinction matters when comparing molecules and studies. [12]
Nucleotides also participate in metabolism and signalling. ATP, for example, is a nucleotide used in cellular energy transfer. However, a statement about ATP inside a cell cannot establish that swallowing a different nucleotide mixture increases a person's energy or reduces fatigue. Between those two claims lie digestion, absorption, metabolism, tissue demand and, ultimately, the need for a controlled human experiment. [1]
A helpful way to read the category is to keep three questions separate. Does the body need these molecules? Can additional intake change a measurable process? Does that change improve health? A convincing answer to the first question does not automatically answer the other two.
Essential to cells does not necessarily mean essential in the diet
The body obtains nucleotides through new synthesis, recycling pathways and dietary sources. Clinical-nutrition research describes them as potentially conditionally essential: additional supply may matter during particular periods of growth, injury, infection or physiological stress. That is a narrower proposition than saying everyone needs a daily supplement. [1]
Clinical formulations also often combine nucleotides with other nutrients. If patients recover better after receiving a combination, the result does not tell us how much of the benefit came from nucleotides alone. The clinical review frequently cited in this field acknowledges that limitation; its authors were affiliated with Nestlé Nutrition research centres. [1]
For consumers, a claim of insufficient intake needs more than a list of nucleotide-containing foods. It needs a meaningful definition of insufficiency, a way to identify who has it and evidence that correcting it improves an outcome. A vegetarian or vegan diet, by itself, is not such evidence. In the literature reviewed for this article, we did not establish that generally healthy adults need routine supplementation to prevent a common nucleotide-deficiency syndrome.
The exercise studies are interesting—and small
A 2013 trial randomly assigned 20 elite male taekwondo athletes to placebo or a nucleotide-containing supplement for 30 days. Researchers examined immune responses around demanding exercise in a cold environment. Some findings supported an effect on immune-response markers. The experiment did not establish that ordinary consumers would experience fewer infections or age more slowly. [2]
A separate double-blind crossover study involved ten men and ten women performing heavy resistance exercise. Supplementation was associated with differences in selected stress and muscle-damage markers and better recovery of an isometric-force measure. There was no treatment effect on the measured leukocyte counts. The journal publication is from 2016, although an earlier date appears in some summaries. [3]
These experiments are worth taking seriously as leads. Their participants, training protocols and short observation periods also matter. A result after a deliberately strenuous exercise session cannot settle whether a supplement improves everyday resilience, sustained athletic progress or long-term health. The appropriate next step is replication with outcomes that match the intended claim.
The gut story still requires human translation
Vegana Natura's reference page highlights a 2022 paper describing nucleotides as an overlooked prebiotic. Reading the full title changes the interpretation: the experiment studied senescence-accelerated mice. It reported changes in gut microbes and metabolites, offering a biological hypothesis rather than a demonstrated treatment for human digestive symptoms. [4, 10]
A microbiome change is not automatically a health improvement. The practical question is whether people feel or function better, under what conditions and compared with what alternative. For an article aimed at consumers, the species and the actual measured outcome belong beside the finding—not buried at the end of a long bibliography.
What the human ageing trial found
The TALENTs study, published in 2025, was a single-centre, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial in China. It analysed 121 adults aged 60–70 who completed a 19-week intervention using 1.2 grams of nucleotides daily. The reported between-group change in its median DNA-methylation-age measure was −3.08 years (95% confidence interval −5.07 to −1.10). Telomere length did not improve significantly. HOMA-IR, an indirect measure of insulin resistance, improved; fasting glucose and HbA1c did not significantly change. [5]
The study reported no serious adverse events, but its size and duration limit safety conclusions. Zhen-ao Group commissioned and funded it, and the intervention was supplied by the associated biotechnology company. The authors report sponsor assistance with recruitment and medical consultation, but no involvement in design, analysis or writing. [5]
An ageing clock estimates age from molecular patterns. Moving that estimate does not show that someone has gained three years of life. Geroscience researchers distinguish a responsive biomarker from a validated substitute for a clinical benefit. The latter requires evidence that treatment-induced changes reliably correspond to outcomes that matter to people. [11]
My reading is that this is a reason to commission stronger trials. It is not a sufficient basis for a promise of rejuvenation. Useful follow-up questions include whether an effect persists, whether other research groups reproduce it, and whether people retain physical function or avoid illness. A striking number expressed in years should not distract from those questions.
A newer paper is not necessarily a new experiment
A 2026 follow-up examined whether genetic differences related to urate metabolism modified responses in TALENTs. It reported different biomarker patterns across genetic-risk groups. This is a secondary analysis of the same participants and intervention—not a second trial independently reproducing the original result. [6]
Such analyses can identify hypotheses about who might respond. They cannot yet tell a consumer which product to buy or establish a reliable genetic test for selecting a dose. A growing publication list can deepen understanding of one experiment without increasing the number of independent experiments.
What Vegana Natura's products do—and do not—tell us
The current IMMUN & CELL page describes five nucleotides—AMP, CMP, GMP, IMP and UMP—alongside six vitamins and two amino acids. It explicitly states that its specified health claims apply to the vitamins, and that explanations of nucleotide biology should not be read as evidence of the product's effects. This qualification deserves to be acknowledged. [8]
COLON & CELL likewise describes a five-nucleotide combination with selected vitamins and includes the same distinction about vitamin-related claims. These are combination products. Their names and surrounding cellular biology do not establish which ingredient causes any perceived benefit. [9]
TALENTs used a four-nucleotide mixture containing AMP, CMP, GMP and UMP, in a defined ratio. Its findings cannot simply be transferred to every product bearing the word nucleotides. [5] To judge a commercial formulation, we would want the actual daily quantities and ratios, an appropriate comparison with the research intervention and preferably a controlled study of the finished product.
Purity and clinical efficacy also answer different questions. A laboratory report can help establish composition or check contamination. A human trial asks whether taking the product causes a useful outcome. Both are valuable; a claim of Swiss quality or high bioavailability does not substitute for the second kind of evidence. On the public pages and references reviewed, we did not identify a controlled trial establishing a longevity benefit for these finished Vegana Natura formulations.
Who should be cautious?
The brand's own instructions exclude IMMUN & CELL for people with gout, following organ transplantation or while taking immunosuppressive medication. COLON & CELL also lists yeast allergy. These product-specific warnings should be read before purchase and discussed with a clinician where relevant. They should not be interpreted as proof that every nucleotide preparation has an identical risk profile. [8, 9]
A short study with no serious adverse events cannot establish the safety of years of use, rare events or use alongside every medication. Nor does an ingredient's natural presence in the body establish the safety of an additional dose. For people managing a medical condition, the relevant question is suitability for that person and formulation, not whether the ingredient sounds familiar.
What would justify greater confidence?
I would look for independent, adequately sized trials with clearly declared formulations and doses, predefined outcomes and sufficient follow-up. Research should show who benefits, how large the benefit is and whether it matters outside a laboratory measurement. Funding, exclusions, adverse events and neutral findings should be as easy to find as the headline result.
For now, the sensible position is interested but selective. Nucleotides deserve investigation, and the human signals should not be dismissed. They also do not yet justify treating nucleotide supplementation as an established way for healthy adults to live longer or preserve independence. The question a buyer deserves answered is specific: what has this product, at this dose, been shown to improve in people like me?
