Circular RNA MT-RNR2 in Mitochondrial Function and Aging

Researchers report mitochondrial circular RNAs are abundant at MT-RNR2 and are depleted in older human cohorts and senescent fibroblasts. The mitochondrial RNA‑binding protein GRSF1 binds linear and circular MT-RNR2; GRSF1 depletion lowers circMT-RNR2, reduces fumarate and succinate, and accelerates cellular senescence and mitochondrial dysfunction. Authors suggest mechanistic studies of MT-RNR2 biogenesis (possibly trans‑splicing) and functional manipulation to assess effects on the TCA cycle and aging.

Why it mattersCircMT-RNR2 declines with age and links to mitochondrial dysfunction and fibroblast senescence.
